Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion for Nintendo 3DS Giveaway

There is one gift that Santa will be putting under our tree this year that is sure to be a big hit with our entire family - Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion for Nintendo 3DS.

Disney just launched the second edition of the hit game Epic Mickey last month (the version for other gaming platforms is titled Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two) and it is already receiving rave reviews!

Created by critically acclaimed DS developer, DreamRift, under the direction of Disney Interactive's Junction Point, Disney Epic Mickey 2: Power of Illusion is the first ever 3DS version of the popular franchise and features a unique innovative drawing and painting function that allows players to create rough versions of objects that magically transform into classic Disney-style 2D illustrations.

Utilizing the games' unparalleled dual screen integrations, players then move their creations to the top screen where they are further transformed into full-color, fully rendered 3D visuals.

Disney Epic Mickey 2: Power of Illusion was created specifically for the Nintendo 3DS where "Reality is What You Paint Of It." Paying tribute to the classic Sega Genesis title "Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse," the game focuses on the fabled Castle of Illusion and its classic villainess, the evil witch Mizrabel.

Mizrabel finds herself an unwilling inhabitant of Wasteland, an alternate world filled with 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions. She unleashes a plot to escape using the Castle of Illusion to imprison and drain the cartoon essence from currently famous Toons. Players take on the role of Mickey Mouse who must utilize his magical brush to wield paint and thinner to confront the evil witch Mizrabel and save the day.

Product Features:
  • Special drawing and painting function that allows players to create an interactive world using the stylus to draw objects in the bottom screen that magically transform into classic Disney 2D illustrations. Objects then can be move to the top screen where they are transformed into fully realized objects that pop off the screen in stunning 3D.
  • Utilize the core "Disney Epic Mickey" gameplay mechanic of paint and thinner while playing as Mickey Mouse in an attempt to save classic Disney Toon characters.
  • Engage in epic boss battles with familiar Disney villains using attacks involving the power of illusions to surprise players.
  • Adventure through game levels based on animated Disney films such as "Peter Pan" and "Aladdin."
  • Interaction with beloved Disney characters.
  • In between adventures, develop a fortress by taking a small fort and expand it into a thriving castle.

Metromint Water Review and Giveaway

As someone who is required to drink a LOT of water each day due to chronic kidney stones and Interstitial Cystitis, drinking plain, boring water can get very old, very fast. Sodas and citrusy drinks can worsen my IC, not to mention add calories to my diet, so it's a challenge to find something that tastes good and is still good for my health.

I am also a mother to a type 1 diabetic child, so it's important for me to find beverages that do not require her to take insulin (carb/sugar free). Neither one of us enjoy the the taste of artificial sweeteners, not to mention there are still hidden sugar alcohols in those type of drinks, so diet drinks are out.

When I recently learned about Metromint water, and the fact that it is all natural, unsweetened and comes in a wide varitey of flavors, I was so excited to check it out for my daughter and for myself.

The very awesome people at Metromint sent me this wonderful review kit filled with Metromint waters and a cute polka dot Metromint tote bag:

Being a spearmint lover, I of course decided to try the spearmint right off the bat! Let me tell you, it was love at first taste! The mint was not overpowering, yet it wasn't too subtle either. As my fellow blonde Goldilocks would say, "It was just right!"

I had my daughter try it next and her eyes went wide and she exclaimed, "Oh my gosh! This is SO good!" I totally agree!

We tried the chocolatemint water next:

As you can see from the description in the photo below, not only is the mint all-natural but so is the chocolate (infused with natural cocoa essence). As with all Metromint waters, the mint is grown in Washington's Yakima Valley and is added to purified water for the freshest taste. No sweeteners, no preservatives, and no calories, yet the taste is amazing and naturally sweet and minty!

The chocolatemint water reminds me of peppermint mocha, but as with the other flavors, the taste is not overpowering. It's mild and refreshing and at zero carbs, my daughter can drink as much of it as she wants without having to cover it with insulin!

The other flavors we tried (cherrymint and goodberrymint) were just as tasty, and we're eager to try the other varieties that were not in the review kit (lemonmint and orangemint). I will especially be interested to know if the lemon and orange are okay with my IC condition. I suspect with as light as the taste is for the flavors I did try, these will be fine as well.

I will warn IC sufferers to be careful trying any new drink. There are days when I'm flaring and I cannot drink Metromint (much to my dismay) or any other drink other than plain water. But on non-flare days, I am so happy to have Metromint to give me that crisp, refreshing taste that makes drinking water so much more fun and yummy!

My daughter, fortunately, can drink as much Metromint as she wants at any time and never has to worry about it raising her blood sugar levels!

Want to experience the amazingness of Metromint Water for yourself? Metromint is offering one lucky reader of So a Blonde Walks Into a Review a kit just like the one I received, filled with a variety of 6 Metromint waters and a polka dot Metromint tote bag!

To enter, simply leave a comment on this post stating why you'd like to win, then follow the instructions on the Rafflecopter widget below to complete your entry. There are bonus methods for entry as stated on the Rafflecopter widget.

Entry deadline is 12:00 am on Sunday, December 23, 2012. By entering, you automatically agree to all the rules and disclaimers listed here. Please also see my disclosure policy here.

Every Heartbeat Matters - Feel Again by OneRepublic

When OneRepublic's new video for their song "Feel Again" came out, I instantly fell in love with it. It's such a happy, uplifting song!

I recently received an email from the "Every Beat Matters" campaign informing me that "Feel Again" incorporates the heartbeats of children in Malawi and Guatemala into the song in an effort to raise awareness and funds to help save millions of children each year. Reading this made me fall even more in love with the song and OneRepublic!

A portion of “Feel Again” proceeds will benefit Save the Children’s Every Beat Matters™ campaign, which aims to bring basic lifesaving care to children around the world. Every year about 7 million children die before their 5th birthday—mostly from preventable and treatable causes, including pneumonia, diarrhea and newborn complications.

“We’re excited to team up with Save the Children to let people know we all have the power to help children survive,” said Ryan Tedder, lead singer of OneRepublic. “Feel Again is an opportunity for us to be the voices for these children. We hope the song they inspired will now inspire others to join the Every Beat Matters™ campaign.”

So not only can you enjoy such a beautiful song of life and hope, but you can help prevent and treat diseases such as pneumonia and malaria for children in need just by purchasing the song. To download "Feel Again," click here.

I'll pause for a minute and let you download the song....

Done? Good! Now watch this quick video to see how you just played an integral role in helping such a worthy cause...

Be sure to spread the word to everyone you know so that they too can help. Full information can be found at EveryBeatMatters.org. You can also follow OneRepublic and EveryBeat on Twitter, and like the Every Beat Matters page on Facebook.

Come Into the Gardens If You Dare! Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Review

One of my favorite things to do every fall is get my scare on at Busch Gardens' Howl-O-Scream. I love the park year-round, but wow do they really do it up for Halloween!

I had the honor of being invited back to Busch Gardens' "Fright Night" in celebration of the opening of Howl-O-Scream a couple of weekends ago and had a blast as always.

This invitation from "The Lady of the Gardens" should give you a glimpse of how much creativity and fun Busch Gardens puts into Howl-O-Scream each year:

Inside of the straw nest is an old-style apothecary bottle filled with "muddy" gummy worms. I was instructed to "take one a day" until Fright Night. How ingenious and fun is that?

My husband and I arrived for the event around 4pm, about two hours before the scare officially starts. Even during the day, the decorations are so festive and lift your "spirits." (ha!)

We strolled around the park, soaking in all of the sights and imagined how they'd look even cooler when evening hit. We were summoned to dinner by The Lady of the Gardens at 5 pm and were treated to a ghoulishly delightful meal!

As we were filling our plates with delicious, fun food, the star of the evening entered the tent. The Lady of the Gardens was even creepier in person, silently sneaking up behind guests and scaring them to death. Thankfully she let us take a picture with her instead of making us all into her zombie meal!

As we were finishing our meal, the announcement came on throughout the park that Howl-O-Scream was officially beginning (it starts at 6 pm). We were told that this year, there was a traveling caravan of "scarers" who would be chasing victims in the park when and where they least expected it.

Off we went wondering when we might run into them, with me silently hoping we'd come up behind them and not the other way around! Luckily for me, that's what ended up happening, but we still had to walk through the gang of zombies and hope that our lives would be spared. ;)

The first haunted house on our path was "Bitten" and already the line was SUPER long! Howl-O-Scream is such a popular event each year that the park has had to close due to capacity, so I highly recommend Busch Gardens' Unlimited Quick Queue passes to bypass the long lines.

We were fortunate enough to have the passes ourselves, courtesy of The Lady of the Gardens and it was so awesome being able to go right to the front of each line with no waiting! Some lines can be over an hour long, so the Quick Queue Passes are worth every penny and really help you get as much fun in as possible during your visit.

Bitten was fabulous and had my heart racing! I assumed my usual position of squeezing my husband for dear life and bracing for the unexpected. If screams were dollar bills, I'd be a rich lady because I screamed a LOT! Want proof? Here it is!

Yes, that is me screaming thirteen trillion times!

Before we hit our next haunted house, we had to treat ourselves to the pretzel bites with beer mustard in Germany as well as one of our favorite traditions...face painting!

My husband scared quite a few kids with his skeleton face paint for sure! The artists do such a good job on these creations that I even won an eBay Halloween costume contest for the cat face I had done at Howl-O-Scream last year!

By the time we finished with the pretzels and face paint, the sun had set and Howl-O-Scream was in full glory! One of our favorite views at night is Dark Kastle in Germany, where we love to ride "Curse of Dark Kastle." You feel like you just stepped in to Transylvania when you see the tower looming in the darkness. So awesome!

We hit a few more haunted houses after that, then went to Scotland to catch the fabulous show "Fiends." This year's show was even better than last year's, which is saying a lot because last year's performance was pretty spectacular!

The entire audience was having a blast singing and dancing along to the music, and the two young guys next to me were definitely entertained by the gorgeous nurses! ;)

We got to meet the cast after the show, some of whom were part of last year's cast as well. The male characters are just as funny offstage as they are on, and the nurses are as friendly and sweet as they are beautiful.

We had time to go through one last haunted house after the show. "13, Your Number is Up!" was just across the way from Fiends, so we immediately headed there.

Next to "Fear Fair," "13" is my absolute favorite! And here's a video that shows you just how fabulous "Fear Fair" is!

Hard to top that, but "13" definitely comes close! In fact, two men we had chatted with after leaving "Fear Fair" earlier in the evening asked us if we had been to "13" yet.

They had no problem admitting that they had been frightened silly when they had gone. "It's REALLY scary," they warned us.

They were right! As you go through the maze, you enter numbered sections that are designed around popular phobias.

For me, the scariest part was the fear of heights section. I can be in a tall building or on a para sail, but in "13" you have to walk along what appears to be a plank over boiling water.

It's all smoke and mirrors, literally, but it really messes with your head. In fact, the line had come to a halt inside of the maze because one woman could not cross it, even though there really is no plank and it's just a flat floor. She had to be escorted back out.

I myself froze when I went to take my first step as my husband obliviously crossed it without a problem leaving me behind. I kept yelling for him but he couldn't hear me over the screams and noises inside of the maze.

When he finally turned around and saw I wasn't behind him, I made him come back and walk me across "the plank" lol. I really could not do it by myself! Funny how the mind can play tricks on you and make something seem so real that it freezes you in your tracks like that!

It was the PERFECT way to end such a fun night and we were so sad it was over! Time really does fly when you're having fun. We could have stayed for several more hours and still wouldn't be able to get enough!

Here are more pics of the fun we had and the delightfully spooky sights we saw:

"Spider" and "web" covered bridge

One spider's big meal!

"Fear Grows Here!"

Fred Escare Scott

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! We finally found him!

I snapped this while bravely walking through "Fear Fair."

For more information on Busch Gardens' Howl-O-Scream, click their official website here. There are links to each of the haunted houses, including fun web cams you can watch from at home as people walk through and get scared to death!

There are only four more weekends of Howl-O-Scream left, so get your tickets and get to the park faster than you can say "Boo!" And if you see the Lady of the Gardens, tell her we said hello and thank you for the fabulous time!

Disclosure: We were treated to complimentary tickets, quick queue passes, a meal and a gift bag as a thank you for participating in this social media "fright night," but as always, opinions expressed on this site are never influenced by comp products or events.

Keeping Kewl With ClimaPak

As a mom of a Type 1 diabetic, one of the most challenging problems can be keeping my daughter's insulin at the proper temperature.

When I heard about the brand new ClimaPak by Kewl Innovations, I immediately wanted to try their system out! We've tried ice packs and insulated bags before, but they've never been very good at keeping insulin temperature regulated while out and about.

Kewl Innovations sent me the ClimaPak Bundle for review along with some fun goodies. Check out their "Kewl" message fan in this video I made:

I was very impressed with the ClimaPak right from the start. It holds either two vials of insulin, a pen and a vial, or two pens. In our case, we have an insulin pen for the day and a vial of long-lasting insulin for the evening. (Please note that pen caps must be removed in order for the pen to be stored in the ClimaPak.)

We mostly need the ClimaPak for the daytime insulin (the Novalog pen), but being able to put our long-acting Lantus vial in there as well on overnight trips is especially handy.

Not only is the ClimaPak portable, but it doesn't require electricity, and the battery life is very long (3 to 5 days on a single charge). So if we're out walking around all day in Central Park in NYC on vacation, we don't have to worry about the battery dying.

The ClimaPak bundle comes with a wall charger, car charger and USB charger and it includes an additional lithium-ion battery back as well as the regular battery. So we can charge our system on our many, long road trips...a definite perk!

Without any fans or noise, ClimaPak will control the temperature of the insulin in both hot and cold environments. There is a programmable LCD display that shows you what temperature the ClimaPak is at.

It maintains a range of 44-86 degrees depending on which temperature you select on the system. If your insulin requires a storage temperature of around 75 degrees for example, you just program that into the ClimaPak and you're all set!

You can't input a specific temperature, however. Instead, there are 2 range settings:

I 86 - Your medication will be kept between 44°F-86°F
I 77 - Your medication will be kept between 44°F-77°F

The system fits into a large purse, tote, laptop bag or backpack. I carry it in my purse for Natalie since it's a little too big for her diabetes bag (which is fairly small).

There are programmable alarms to remind you when the next dose of insulin is due, but we don't use those since we don't have a set schedule for eating or dosing.

(EDIT/CORRECTION FROM CLIMAPAK: "ClimaPak doesn't have a reminder for next dose. Rather, there is timer you can use for tracking your last dose. That way if you are ever in doubt about when your last dose was, you just look at the timer." I am seeking further clarification on this since their literature states,"programmable alarms.")

(EDIT/CLARIFICATION FROM CLIMAPAK #2: "Programmable just refers to the option to have the alarm sound turn on and off, also you have a few ways to respond to alarms if you ever get them. You can silence the alarm or clear it all together depending on your preference.")

I am so thrilled to have finally found a way to keep my daughter's insulin at the proper temperature! It helps us to be more active while having one less thing to worry about. And that's very "kewl" in my book!

The regular ClimaPak is $199 and the ClimaPak Bundle is $249. Worth every penny, in my opinion! Right now, there is a limited-time promotion for $25 off either one. Simply enter BACK2SKEWL at checkout to receive the discount.

You can check out the write-up Kewl Innovations posted about my daughter and me here. And purchase and/or learn more about ClimaPak here.

Be sure to follow them on Twitter and like their Facebook page as well. Stay kewl!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary ClimaPak Bundle system to facilitate this review, but opinions expressed on this site are never influenced by comp products.

Sailing on a Movie Star -The Schooner Woodwind II in Annapolis, MD

A couple of weeks ago, my husband, daughter and I had the privilege of sailing aboard The Schooner
Woodwind II in Annapolis, MD. It was a perfect day for sailing and it was the perfect boat to sail on!

The Woodwind is a beautiful, 74-foot wooden schooner with tall, majestic sails and it just so happens to be a movie star to boot, having been featured in "Wedding Crashers." It is available for public and private cruises every day of the week, with the public cruises lasting 2 hours.

We drove to Annapolis from Leesburg, VA for the 4 o'clock public cruise and thanks to Northern Virginia traffic, we ended up stuck on the highway and made it to the boarding dock with literally two minutes to spare!

Thank God we made it in time to board because the 6 o'clock sunset cruise was booked up. And we really would have missed out on an amazing time if we had not been able to sail!

We set off from the harbor of Annapolis with at least a dozen other people and immediately took notice of the Naval Academy. I grew up in Annapolis and spent almost every weekend boating, many times by the Naval Academy and harbor, so this was like coming home to me.

One of the best parts about sailing on The Woodwind is that you get to be part of the crew by either helping to hoist the sails or steer the boat if you wish. My husband Matt was the first to hoist a sail with a few others and then I got to take a turn:

My daughter Natalie took the helm toward the end of the sail and she had such a blast!

There was another child who steered us for awhile too. I love that they let children take an active role in sailing the boat!

Here's video of Natalie navigating us through the wake of a very large speed boat:

It made my husband and I very happy to see Natalie enjoying herself so much and we were definitely loving every minute ourselves!

The winds were strong enough that we were able to sail all the way out to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Some days, the wind is strong enough to sail as far as the Thomas Point Lighthouse, another favorite place from my childhood boating memories.

During the sail, we were able to look at a photo album filled with pictures from the filming of "Wedding Crashers" and it was very cool to see that Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Rachael McAdams, Isla Fisher, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Walken all sailed on the same boat that we were on.
From left: Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson and Rachael McAdams

Christopher Walken "steering" the boat (see Captain Jen steering it for real from below).

Isla Fisher and Vince Vaughn

We may not have been on the sunset cruise, but the sun was setting as we headed back to the harbor, and it was stunningly beautiful to see it on the water!

Here's a video that shows just how perfect the winds were and how much fun it was to sail on the Woodwind (note the "pirate ship" in the distance).

As you can hear from Rena, who is part of the Woodwind crew, a complimentary beverage (soda or water) is part of your sail for the public cruise and a cash bar is available as well. There are lots of local beers to choose from and you also receive a complimentary snack.

If you live in the DMV area or are planning to visit, I highly recommend a sail on board the Schooner Woodwind II! It's a perfect activity for birthdays, anniversaries, date night, etc.

Check out the Schooner Woodwind website for more information on booking, events, pricing and more. You can find them on Facebook and Twitter as well.

Disclosure: My family and I received a complimentary sail to facilitate this review, but opinions stated are never influenced by comp products/events.
