"I'm Not As Smart as the Other Children"

My son came home from playing outside not long ago and he relayed to me a conversation he had with a neighborhood boy who is autistic. There is one thing this child said to my son that took the wind out of me.

"I'm not as smart as the other children."

I have not been able to get that out of my head. It is heartbreaking that any child should feel this way or have to live with such a disability.

I recently received an email alert from The Mercury-Free Partnership about a campaign underway to support the Mercury Reduction Act of 2009. Having read reports about the link between autism and mercury exposure, I am 100% behind it.

Now, I want to share the information with you so that you too can help protect our children from the dangers of mercury.

Below is a letter to Representative Rick Boucher (Energy and Commerce Committee) that you can sign (and edit for personalization if you wish), and fax to Jason Sabo from Mercury Free Partnership. Fax your signed letter to 310-496-1335 and Jason will ensure it is sent to Representative Boucher.

The Honorable Rick Boucher

United States House of Representatives

2187 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative Boucher,

As a concerned mother focused on the safety and well being of American citizens, I am writing to you to bring your attention to a problem that has resulted in more than half a million American children born with developmental disorders and birth defects—mercury pollution. Each year, coal fired power plants release more than 100,000 pounds of mercury into the air each year. Once released, the mercury lands in lakes and rivers were the methyl mercury is consumed by fish and, in turn, humans.

The physical effects of mercury exposure are devastating. According to the National Research Council, mercury exposure poses a great risk to children, especially in utero, and should be avoided. The developing nervous system of children makes them five times more sensitive to mercury than adults, and unborn children can be seriously affected even though the mercury causes no symptoms in their mothers. Mercury exposure greatly affects my child’s mental development as well. Exposure occurring before birth or in infancy can cause communication and learning disabilities that may be irreversible. According to SafeMinds (Sensible Action For Ending Mercury-Induced Neurological Disorders), the autism epidemic that began in the late 1980’s is likely due primarily to toxins adversely affecting fetus and infants during development. Mercury is likely a major contributor to this toxin-induced autism, whether the source of the mercury is from vaccines or environmental mercury exposure.

As a country, we cannot abandon coal as a means of energy generation. This is why we request that you look very closely at supporting legislation this year to make significant immediate reductions in Mercury pollution. One organization that I have been working with, is the Mercury Free Partnership, an organization determined to raise the awareness of mercury reduction, and has a draft bill that offers a sensible set of limits on the amount of mercury emitted by coal fired power plants. What is important about this opportunity is that it is designed to work in sync with existing regulatory efforts and also is designed to bring in as many stakeholders as possible so that we can have a bi-partisan success.

At a time when health care is a top priority, we must consider the environmental triggers that cause some of these major health concerns. Please help us promote awareness and attention to the major problem of mercury pollution. We simply cannot wait.

Sincerely,
(YOUR NAME)

You can also send a copy of the letter to your local representative. Click here to find your representative as well as his/her contact information.

Thank you for your helping in protecting our children!

There's Something About Disney

I don't know what it is but there is just something magical about Disney that never gets old. I still to this day feel the same excitement that I did as a kid when I see images of Disneyworld or even the Disney store in the mall! It's like being a kid all over again when you see those colorful, happy Disney characters. It truly is enchanting.

Shows coming this fall & winter:

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Over The Top, an all-new live entertainment extravaganza featuring the ultimate tug of war between Ringmaster Chuck Wagner and clown eccentric Tom Dougherty over a magical top hat that controls the circus. When the Ringmaster dons the hat he conjures stupendous spectacles for his circus, like the stunt riding Royal Cossack Cavalry while the clown uses the hat to summon silly and whimsical acts for his circus, such as a cavalry of goats riding on ponies in a Barnyard Bonanza. They continue to top one another until the Ringmaster and clown realize that the magic of the circus is not in the hat but in the hearts of everyone. The show culminates in an amazing display of gigantic glowing rainforest flowers surrounding Chinese acrobats swinging on vines and propelling through the air. Over the Top is two circuses in one providing excitement for the whole family.

Audiences will see nearly 100 animals including flying dogs, Asian elephants that skip, hop, and groove, miniature horses, llamas, pigs, and even a performing porcupine. In a daring feat, the courageous Daniel Raffo stands eye to eye with a pack of powerful Bengal tigers. Circus celebrities help rev-up the motorcycle madness featuring one cycle on a high wire and seven speeding riders in a Globe of Steel. Extraordinary aerial acts fill the arena sky with a rare double-decker trapeze and the Bombastic Bouncers who combine gigantic inner tubes and awe-inspiring acrobatics in a high-energy performance never before seen in America. And with the audience's participation, this circus really goes Over The Top!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents ZING ZANG ZOOM®: Through the mystery of magic and the mastery of skill, audiences will be spellbound as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents ZING ZANG ZOOM®, a thrill-filled, mind-blowing circus spectacular where family fun is no illusion.

Magical Zingmaster Alex and his assistant, the alluring Levitytia, lead audiences through a kaleidoscope of color and imagery revealing extraordinary worlds of fantasy, flight and phenomena that celebrates the uplifting spirit of the circus and wards off a cynical Mr. Gravity and his team of "heavies" who try to bring everyone down.

Be mesmerized when a four-ton elephant disappears before your eyes, and a gravity-inducing nemesis transforms across species into a ferocious tiger. Stand in awe as a dazzling trapeze artist performs a perilous, anatomically unimaginable one-arm speed-spin high atop the arena floor, and two formidable, female human cannonballs are blasted through the air in a daring, awe-inspiring display of bravery. Become electrified as the dangerous double wheel of steel, the gasp-inducing high wire and soaring gigantic swings defy both gravity and logic.

Fun-filled magic merges with traditional circus arts to create a world of infinite possibilities where apprentice illusionists levitate their parents with a wave of a wand, and audience spirits keep rising as the high flying circus is (literally) turned upside down. Perhaps the most magical of all, watch in amazement as an incomparable array of exotic animals including a herd of majestic Asian elephants, magnificent Bengal tigers and elegant Arabian and Friesian horses join forces with our human performers to create an experience that will surprise and delight Children of All Ages, rendering us speechless and reminding us that the magic of The Greatest Show On Earth® lives forever in our hearts and imaginations.

Lunchables Lunch Combinations - Easy and Delicious!

As a busy mom, I have long been a fan of Oscar Mayer Lunchables for my kids. They're especially handy when we're on an outing or field trip with our homeschool group. Just grab the box and go!

Now, Oscar Mayer has come out with Lunchables Lunch Combinations that come with even more exciting, convenient lunch combinations. The new line includes spring water and a number of firsts for the brand, including sub sandwiches and applesauce (convenient AND healthy!).

The six new varieties include: Turkey + Cheddar Sub Sandwich, Ham + American Sub Sandwich, Turkey + Cheddar Cracker Combos, Ham + American Cracker Combos, Deep Dish Cheese Pizza and Deep Dish Pepperoni Pizza. Both the Turkey + Cheddar Sub Sandwich and Deep Dish Cheese Pizza meet the Kraft Foods Sensible Solution criteria for nutritional value.

My kids are the most excited over the subs (a first for the line), not to mention desserts like Chewy Chips Ahoy! Cookies and Mini Nilla Wafers.

But, unlike their mom, they don't give much thought to the fact that what they're eating is healthy. The Lunchables turkey is made with 100% turkey breast, which is a great source of protein. The bread is made with whole grain and the cheese is 2% Kraft, which provides them with calcium.

With so many choices, my kids are sure to not get bored and we'll definitely be bringing along the new combinations with us on this year's field trips!

Click here for more information on Oscar Mayer Lunchables Lunch Combinations.

Guest Post: The Courage to Tell Your Story by Sue William Silverman

Please give a warm welcome to Sue Silverman, author of Fearless Confessions: A Writer's Guide to Memoir, as she shares with us how to find the courage to tell YOUR story. As you'll see, Sue speaks from experience and I commend her bravery in sharing her story here with my readers. Thank you, Sue!

Be sure to enter the giveaway for her book in the post above this one as well.

**************************************

“You should write your own story,” my therapist says.

I’ve been in therapy about a year. I slouch on the blue couch in his office and stare at the ceiling. Unable to meet his gaze, I say, “I don’t have anything to say about myself.”

He knows I’ve been trying to write novels for years. So what he really means is: Why don’t I stop writing fiction and write my own true story?

But wouldn’t I be too ashamed to write about how, growing up, my father sexually molested me? Wouldn’t I be too embarrassed to write about how, as an adult, I struggle with a sexual addiction? How could I possibly commit to paper the fact that my life has been in a constant state of disarray?

Besides, who would even want to read about me? I’m a nobody. My life is worthless. I’m a mess.

For months, my therapist insists that writing a book about my experiences would not only help me, but other struggling women.

Finally, after my parents die, when I’m emotionally stronger, I capitulate.

Finally, I tell my therapist: “Well, maybe I’ll write a short, short paragraph about myself. But that’s all I have to say.”

Once I begin to write, however, I can’t stop. I write as if with a brain fever. At the end of three months, I finish three-hundred pages.

Was the writing painful? At times, yes. Did the writing force me to explore, in even more detail, secrets only my therapist knew? Yes. Was it worth it, anyway? Yes, yes, yes. Writing my first memoir, then going on to write a second, are the best gifts I ever gave myself.

I also came to learn that writing about painful subjects ultimately lessens the pain. With every word I wrote, I felt more courageous. With every word, I also better understood my past, all those secrets.

Writing a memoir helped to organize my life, give it a previously undiscovered structure. Fearlessly writing memoir allows all of us to understand our own life narratives.

If you’re like me, though, it can initially be scary to confront those deepest, most intimate secrets—even in the privacy of a writing room—and even if no one reads what we write!

So let me give you an exercise that I use in Fearless Confessions in order to help you get started: Write a short paragraph about a secret you’ve never told anyone, except maybe a therapist. Try to discover why this secret has such power.
I hope you feel how I did, after writing: lighter, more emotionally free.
