Summer-Ready Skin With Tree Hut

It's swimsuit season and that means it's more important than ever to take care of our skin. Nothing worse than that dry, alligator look on our legs, ladies...right?

I recently tried a new product that is perfect for moisturizing my skin and keeping it beach-worthy. Tree Hut is an amazing skin care and lotion line that includes lotions, shower washes, body butters and sugar scrubs.

And all of their scents are from the tropics! I tried the new Tree Hut Shea Moisturizing Shower Wash in Coconut Lime:

It definitely smells tropical! Every time I shower, the smell conjures up that beachy, fun, summery feeling. And it is so nourishing to my skin. No alligator skin for my legs at the pool!

I also tried their matching Shea Body Butter in the same scent and it makes my skin even more silky-smooth. It's not too heavy like some body butters can be, which is a huge plus.

All Tree Hut products are made with 100% certified organic shea butter and they also include other natural extracts and oils. New mothers use Tree Hut products to combat stretch marks, another important benefit to consider.

Find out more about Tree Hut's wonderful line of products here. You can also find them on Facebook here and Twitter here.

Disclosure: I received complimentary products from Tree Hut to facilitate this review.

Women's Health - Knowledge is Power

With all of the "female" health problems I've suffered over the years, it's a good possibility that I alone have kept the gynecological field in business. :) I've also been to a variety of doctors and have been given a variety of opinions.

So far, I've avoided having a hysterectomy and I'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible. Far too many doctors, in my opinion, push this option onto women when I believe it should be a last resort.

The AAGL has created a website to help women learn about less invasive procedures (even for those who do require a hysterectomy). They believe in the importance of educating women about such options and helping them to make the best choices for their bodies and their health.

Unfortunately, many women are not told of less invasive options for treating their conditions. Whether it be heavy bleeding, fibroids, stress urinary incontinence, or pelvic organ prolapse, there are treatment options available that do not require traditional surgery.

Since 1/3 of women will experience these conditions in their lifetime, usually after pregnancy and childbirth, information on alternative treatments is so important. Traditional surgery frequently carries a higher risk of complications and a longer healing process. Minimally invasive procedures, however, are done quickly and relatively easily, usually require much less time to heal, and there's a lot less pain, too.

The US News & World reported that, out of the one in four women who receive hysterectomies, approximately 85% are still treated with traditional open abdominal surgical methods, despite the perfection of a decades old laparoscopic procedure that leaves the ovaries and cervix in place. So if I were to go forward with a hysterectomy, I would make sure my doctor uses the laparoscopic procedure if at all possible.

If you doctor proves unwilling or unable to perform minimally invasive procedures, you should feel empowered to seek out a second opinion from a gynecologist who offers less invasive options.

Visit the AAGL's website to learn about the alternative treatments that exist for your condition. Knowledge is power!

Norton 360 - Protection You Can Count On

There are several computers in my home, all networked. And each one has had at least one deadly virus. I lost a laptop not long ago to a virus it couldn't recover from. And my teenage daughter seems to pick up a new virus everyday as she surfs such virus-laden sites like MySpace.

So I was like an eager kid in a classroom raising my hand yelling, "Pick me! Pick me!" when an offer went out from Mom Central to try Symantec's new anti-virus software, Norton 360 vs. 2.0.

This software is the creme de la creme, people! We have not had a virus since installing it. And the installation? Super easy.

Norton 360 vs. 2.0 has all of the protection you've come to expect from Symantec plus added features that make you wonder how you ever got along without it before:

~You can set it up to automatically scan for viruses and backup your files (including photos, MP3's and videos) and it runs while your computer is idle. No more pop-up security screens interrupting you when you're surfing the net!

~There's now "Norton Identity Safe," that protects your passwords and online id's...no more worrying about hackers obtaining your personal information if you're shopping online or using online banking.

~Convenient automatic form-filling capabilities and one-click log-in to trusted sites and safeguards against phishing sites.

~Registry File Cleanup which optimizes PC performance by removing unneeded files automatically.

~Parental control and anti-spam packs available for download at no extra charge.

The best thing about all of these features? You have the ability to pick and choose which ones you want to utilize and which ones you don't. If you'd rather not have a certain feature run, you simply say so on install (and you can always change your mind later).

And because you can set up your favorite features to run automatically, it's one less thing for busy moms to have to worry about. It's like having a round-the-clock bodyguard protecting your computer. I'm so glad I don't have to worry about losing all of my files to a virus ever again!

You can protect up to 3 computers in one household, another feature that was important to us. We are so impressed with this software and how it has protected us that we won't ever be without it again. There are some things you can skimp on to save money. Security should never be one of them.

Please note: Norton 360 vs. 2.0 is only available for PC computers at this time and will not work for Macs.

Giftventure- Making Gift Giving an Adventure!

Want a fun way to present gifts to your children? Want to add a little more excitement to the whole gift giving process?

There's a brand new way to do just that with the new, creative service Giftventure. This is a fun one! I promise!

Here's a quick breakdown of how it works:
  1. You choose an adventure and character from Giftventure's site.

  2. You tell Giftventure where your hiding place for the gift will be. You will also tell them your child's favorite activity and a local landmark, which will be cleverly placed within the letters your child receives from the character you've chosen. (Note: You do not need to actually have the gifts hiding in the location you choose the entire time. In fact, that can be risky. I didn't place the gifts in our location until the very last minute, lest they happen upon it. Actually, I didn't even BUY the gifts until the last minute.)

  3. Using the information you provide, Giftventure "creates and mails a series of letters and puzzles addressed to the child who must solve the puzzles and follow the clues in the letters to discover the location of your hidden gift."

Through the wonderful group Mom Central, I was given the opportunity to review Giftventure and I was really surprised how excited my kids got. First, I chose Gunther the Dragon as the character for them:

I figured it would appeal to both my son and my daughter. They also have Sophie the Unicorn, Captain Percy the Pirate, Fay the Fairy Princess, and more! Click here to see all of the available characters (including the Easter Bunny).

We chose "The Scrambler's Maze" (for ages 8 to 12) as our adventure:

Since we didn't have any upcoming birthdays or any other gift-related occasions coming up, I decided to just pick up a couple of inexpensive "treasures" for my kids to find using the Giftventure service. Click here for simple and inexpensive ideas that you could use.

I chose "under Dad's sink" as the location and I put "mystery person" as the gift giver just to make it more fun.

The letters arrived all in one large envelope with instructions on how to give them to my kids. (This is how it works when you select "package delivery." With "standard delivery" the letters are each mailed separately to your child.) When they opened and read the first letter, I cannot begin to tell you how excited they were!

The letters detail this fantasy-like story about Cloudstead where the characters live, and Jarvis the elf, where he was last seen, etc. My kids (ages 7 and 11) really got into it!

After reading the first letter:

Natalie, my 7-year-old started looking outside for Jarvis the Elf and told me she thought that maybe he'd been sleeping under the tree in our backyard. She and Matthew (my 11-year-old) then began deciphering the puzzle that came with the first letter:

The answer was one piece of the clue to where the mystery prize was and they were told to keep it safe until the next letter arrived.

They were on pins and needles waiting for that next letter! I had them hidden in my desk drawer, buried under several stacks of papers.

Here's a "this can only happen to me" moment, though. Natalie went searching through my drawer for a pencil and came across the letters!!!! She and Matthew ran upstairs and yelled "YOU'RE Gunther the Dragon!!!" I swear I almost cried, lol.

I sat them down and explained (mostly to Natalie) that I was not Gunther, but I was the mystery gift giver. That made her feel much better. She was back to looking out the windows for signs of Jarvis and wondering what Gunther would tell her next. My son was just as excited too, even though he's not a "believer."

So a word of caution. If you're going to try to be slick like I was and put "mystery person" instead of "mom" down as the gift giver, make sure you find a better hiding place than I did!

They ripped open the second and third letters, which revealed more of the story ("What?! Jarvis is innocent?" Natalie yelled in shock at the end of the third one).

They decoded the clue in the second letter and then put it all together to get the answer as to where the treasure was hidden:

These puzzles and codes are ADORABLE! They are so cute and fun and my kids had a blast. In the end, they found their gifts "under Dad's sink" and are now begging me to do this again for them on their birthdays.

The adventures are geared toward different age levels, so if your kids are a little younger, or a little older, there's something to be found for them.

With Easter fast approaching, you could take advantage of the fun Easter Bunny Adventure. All with the help of the adorable Easter Bunny character:

And to celebrate the holiday, Giftventure is offering 10% off the list price ($19.95)!! Simply enter promo code: momcentral If you sign up by March 14, you will get reduced shipping as well, and your Giftventure will arrive in time for Easter.

Happy adventures! :)

Peternity - Review and Giveaway

Note: If you read this site through a feed such as bloglines, you may see a post that has now been deleted. I accidentally posted something that belonged on my personal site over here. My apologies!

I took my puppy to the vet for a check-up this evening, and the vet was really depressed because one of the cats they shelter at their facility has been sick. They had hoped she'd get better, and she was about to be adopted.

But, just as Sophie, my puppy, was getting her Lyme vaccine, word came in that they were putting the cat down at the local animal hospital. This is the same hospital that I had to take my beagle Copper to when we lost her, so it brought back a lot of memories for me.

Losing a pet is so very, very hard. That's why I was more than happy to accept an opportunity to review a company that helps honor the memories of our beloved friends after they've passed.

Peternity specializes in pet memorials and gifts and helps you "honor your pet for eternity." From their site:
Pet memorials are the perfect way to honor the memory of your dear pet. Choose from a wide selection of pet grave markers, pet urns, pet keepsake boxes, pet portraits, and much, much more. Our hand selected artisans are busy creating lovely pieces to help you to memorialize your dear friend with elegance and grace. Please take a look inside.

I found their pet grave markers and their pet blankets to be especially beautiful:

The grave markers are laser engraved and are are available in Marble, Genuine River Rock, Cultured River Rock, Cultured Slate, Black Granite and Bluestone. There are dozens of different styles and designs to suit your particular tastes.

I really want one of the pet blankets myself. After we lost Copper, I put her picture up on my laptop as a screensaver, and every night, before I shut down the computer, I would "pet" her and tell her I love her. It helped me so much.

To have a physical thing to touch like that really makes a difference. A soft, cuddly blanket with Copper's photo would be so wonderful to curl up with.

The product I was able to review was a gorgeous glass cube that was etched with a pet's name and photo:

That was another one I would personally love to have to remember my Copper by. It is subtle and classy enough to display on an office desk and you can tell it's a very high-quality product. You really have to see it in person to see how elegant it is.

Peternity is generously offering readers of So a Blonde Walks Into a Review, a $75 gift certificate to use towards anything on their site.

Even if you have not lost a pet, maybe you know someone that has? This would be the perfect way to reach out and show them that you care (it means a lot since so often, pet loss is not acknowledged as much as it should be).

To enter, simply click on over to Peternity and check out their products. Then come back here and leave a comment letting me know what your favorite one is. It's that easy!

If you would like a bonus entry to the contest, simply link to this post and to Peternity, and I will put your name down twice. Or, if you are a non-blogger, you may email 5 of your friends these links and cc me at: ablondeandherblog AT yahoo DOT com and you will get a bonus entry as well. Remember that you must comment here as well to be entered.

Deadline to enter is 11:59 on Tuesday, February 5. Winner will be selected at random using Random.org.

Good luck!

Creating Bloomers

When life gets hectic (and when is it ever not hectic?), a great way to connect with your kids is through games.

A good board game forces you to slow down and enjoy laughs and fun with your little ones. And if they can learn a little something in the process? Even better!

Cranium has built a solid reputation of quality, entertaining and educational games for kids. That's why I was thrilled to try two of their latest games from their "Bloom" line.

My 7-year-old daughter Natalie and I played the "Let's Go to the Zoo Seek and Find Puzzle" and "Let's Play Count and Cook Game."

We started with the puzzle game first. The game is geared for ages 3+ and that "+" is important, because even though the game was less challenging for my daughter's age level, she still LOVED it!

The puzzle is 24 pieces that make up a lively scene at the zoo. Players are challenged to find various items and animals. "Find something orange," for example, or, "Find five palm trees." There are two decks of cards held neatly together in a spiral book, one for each of the two levels of difficulty.

The most fun aspect is that players get to circle their finds right on the puzzle and can wipe away their answers of the next game.

I found the Count and Cook game to be particularly adorable. The pieces that you move across the board are these cute and colorful chefs, complete with hats. Little circles with "ingredients" on them are placed all around the board and each player picks their favorite ingredient as their starting point.

The goal is to build one recipe together from the recipe book (which is very simple). As players move around the board, they collect the "ingredients" needed to make each recipe.

And the recipes really work, so you can extend the fun by cooking up a treat together in the kitchen. Younger children also learn simple counting skills as they roll the dice and move around the board.

I had thoroughly planned to offer one of the games I reviewed to one lucky winner, but Natalie refused to part with either one. So you know they are a lot of fun!

If you're interested in playing them, head on over to Cranium Bloom's site to check them out (free U.S. Ground shipping on orders of $25 or more!), or visit your nearest Target store, where all 14 Cranium Bloom games are exclusively sold in-store. Happy playing!

And thanks to Mom Central and Cranium for the chance to review these wonderful games!

Gloves In A Bottle - Review and Giveaway

Now that cold weather is here, my hands would normally be taking a beating. I have such dry, sensitive skin year-round, but winter is the worst for me.

Gloves In A Bottle is an excellent solution for such problem skin, though. It's different from moisturizers in that it is a skin shielding lotion. It keeps moisture in and damaging, harsh irritants (like cold air) out.

It feels quite silky after application and once you keep applying it regularly, you need it less and less often. My hands have been so much more healthy since I started using it and so far, the harsh cold air has yet to affect my hands.

Want to win a bottle of this innovative product? Just head on over to the Holiday Scavenger Bloghunt Party and enter away! Gloves in a Bottle is one of many fabulous prizes up for grabs. But hurry! The deadline to enter is December 9th!

Hanes Kids! Review and Giveaway

Note: I apologize for the lack of clarity in the photos..I'm in the middle of trying to get a new Memory Stick for my camera.

If you're looking for comfortable, stylish and affordable clothing to put under the tree for your kids this year, you must check out Hanes!

Recently, Hanes contacted me and offered me a huge box filled with apparel that my kids and I fell in love with, along with different styles of undergarments and tees that are extremely comfortable on my kids.

These outfits aren't your plain, every day sweats that you may be used to (although we love those, too). You can pair such sweats, though, with tops and bottoms to make them more "dressy," as we learned after receiving the Hanes package.

Check out these gorgeous outfits:

For this look on Natalie, I paired a white, tagless, cotton-rich fleece sweatshirt with a pair of stylish, yet comfortable, pair of stretch-cotton, cropped leggings.

My favorite of all the outfits, this is actually a skort paired with the cute owl puff-sleeve shirt ("Hoot Parade - Yellow Star")...again, all soft and comfortable (in fact, ALL of the apparel that Hanes sent us was super comfortable so I won't keep repeating myself with that particular quality...just assume - Hanes=comfortable!)

Now that winter is approaching, I plan on having Natalie wear tights and boots with this outfit to keep her warm.

This rainbow sweatshirt ("Super Shine - Jubilee Red") reminds me of a cool 70's look, again paired with stretch-cotton, cropped leggings.

Matthew loves his gray, tagless sweatshirt and Natalie is wearing a beautiful, blue, puff-sleeve shirt ("Crown Town Hanes Navy") with blue, tagless, cotton-rich sweatpants (pairing the plain sweats with a matching print).

Then there's the fabulous assortment of underwear and tees:

All cotton, all tagless and all with a comfortable waistband.

The classic A-tank tee, perfect for showing off those muscles!

I myself love the prints available. The tagless, knit boxers are Matthew's fave. He couldn't get over how comfortable the waistband was.

For those who prefer "hybrid" underwear....the popular boxer briefs.

Matthew's favorite of all is his comfy, blue hoodie:

He wears it to go skateboarding outside with his friends all the time. It's easy to just grab it and throw it over whatever he's wearing.

For fun and play, or casual dress, you can count on Hanes to provide you with comfort, style and affordability!

Want a chance to try out Hanes' fabulous line of apparel yourself? Hanes has offered to provide a $50 gift certificate to one lucky winner of the Holiday Scavenger Bloghunt Party. So click on over to enter! Happy hunting!

I Got to Test Drive the New Dodge Grand Caravan!

Thanks to a connection in the DC Metro Moms Blog, I was given an opportunity to test drive the all-new Dodge Grand Caravan (the one on all the commercials and television shows like The View). Only 50 moms in the DC area were given this opportunity so I was very lucky (wooo hoo!)

From the start, I felt like I was cheating on my mini-van. I had a fling with a definite upgrade, and only came back to my van because I couldn't keep the Dodge Grand Caravan. My Chevy Venture was pretty ticked because it decided to no longer provide me heat when I drove it again (hubby's working on making it feel better and I think it might be coming around).

All those commercials that say the Caravan is a home on wheels? So true! You can eat, play board and/or card games, video games, watch television, eat on a table, watch movies, tailgate, use GPS navigation, make phone calls from a built-in dashboard phone service, and more.

The middle sweats swivel to face the back row and you can put a table up in between for games and eating. This picture is bad because there was no flash, but this is after a trip to McDonald's and my kids are eating using the table:

There are TWO...count 'em.....two pull down screens with two separate, wireless headphones. I can listen to Sirius satellite radio in the front, Matthew can play Playstation or watch a DVD in the middle, while Natalie watches Sirius Satellite television in the back (it comes with three channels....Disney, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon).

Even the puppy enjoyed the ride. :) We took her along on a trip to my Grandma's too (an hour and a half away) and it was like packing for a newborn! But everything fit perfectly in the spacious trunk:

There was plenty of room for the dog's crate, supplies, groceries (for lunch) with room to spare.

And those back seats? With a push of a button they automatically fold down into the floor to make even more room, or you can have one side up and one down, and....my favorite setting...they fold back and down to provide tailgate seats! Again, all with just a push of a button.

There's also storage in the floorboards if I had needed more room, a feature I used when I had a few grocery bags to toss into the van (closer to me in the front and easier to get to than the trunk).

The side doors automatically open and close and the windows on the doors automatically roll down, as well. I can't tell you how many times my kids wanted the windows down in the back in my old van. I really loved this feature! There were also pull-up screens for when the sun was shining too brightly, something you usually have to purchase separately and install with an ugly suction cup on the window.

The only problem I had with the van was with the passenger-side back door. My driveway slopes uphill a bit and there was one day that I could not get the door to shut automatically. I sat outside in the cold for about twenty minutes trying to get it to close.

I finally got it to shut by hitting the button and waiting until it was almost closed, then hitting it with my butt so that it was forced close. That wasn't fun! I thought it was because of the hill but when it happened again, I pulled into the road (which was a level surface) and tried to close it there with no luck (and had to go back to the button/butt trick again).

I have heard that mine was not the only one with this problem so hopefully Dodge does something to fix it.

Despite the one flaw, I would still buy this beauty if I could. I'll take a little door trouble for all the entertainment it provided to my kids and for all the features I personally loved.

Look how perfect the van looked in my driveway:

It was totally my trophy van! We were meant to be! How could it leave me?

Devra and I were *this* close to running away in the van together but she didn't want to miss reruns of Punky Brewster. ;)

Natalie summed up my feelings pretty well with this expression the morning that the van left us:

Microsoft Student - Review

As a homeschooling mom, I'm always eager to check out new educational products for my children. When I was offered an opportunity to review Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2008, I was really excited to try it out.

Now? Now I can't imagine never having it! My kids have been having so much fun exploring all that the software has to offer, learning while playing (and not even realizing that they're learning).

It's appropriate for all ages, as each of my children have been able to utilize it (ages 18, 11, and 7). My youngest and I were just having fun playing with the Encarta Kids 2008 feature in which we had to identify different dog breeds (you can also play the cat version).

Matthew, my 11-year-old, explored all on his own, having the most fun with the Encarta encyclopedia section on wars (World War II being the most interesting to him).

I myself played around with the tutorials and created a PowerPoint presentation on the water cycle. I've never used PowerPoint so the tutorial provided by Microsoft Student was perfect for me. I learned all the basics of preparing a presentation in a matter of minutes.

My oldest is in her senior year and finds math to be the most challenging subject. Microsoft Student helps her with several of their tools, her favorite being a calculator ("calculator" really does not do this justice) that utilizes 3D technology to help her visualize whatever equation she's working on. It will also show graphs to further help her understand the problem.

This software is packed with other useful features, including homework help, geography, foreign languages, dictionary, thesaurus, and more.

My only complaint with the software is that it doesn't support Windows 2000. The only computer with Windows XP in our home is my laptop, which I use all the time. So I am battling with my kids constantly over who gets to use my computer.

Also, if you're interested in purchasing the software, I recommend that you purchase the actual CD rather than downloading it from the site, since I had problems downloading it (and I know others did too).

I highly recommend it for students of all ages. It's going on my "most valuable" educational resources list for sure!

For more information and/or to order, just click Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2008

Entertainment Software Rating Board

With the holidays fast approaching, most parents are scrambling to search for the perfect gift for their children. At the top of most lists are, of course, video games.

How will parents, or Santa for that matter, know which ones are appropriate? Thanks to the Entertainment Software Rating Board, it's easy to find out.

The ESRB is a "non-profit, self-regulatory body" that provides information on content and age-appropriateness of games. You can find such information by simply looking at a ratings box on the front of almost all games on the market. Ratings range from EC (Early Childhood 3+) to AO (Adults Only 18+).

On the back of game boxes, you'll find a more detailed explanation on the game's rating, such as "language," "violence," or "blood."

Newer game consoles, such as Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Sony PlayStation 3, come with ESRB parental controls that can help a parent protect their child from inappropriate content.

ESRB offers detailed explanations on how to set up these controls.

For example, on the WII system, you simply do the following:

  1. Access the Wii System Settings.
  2. Click on the blue arrow to reach the Wii System Settings 2 menu options.
  3. Choose “Parental Controls” and select “Yes.”
  4. Enter the 4-digit PIN and select “OK.” If you have forgotten the PIN, select “I forgot” to answer the secret question.
  5. Now you can adjust the “Highest Game Rating allowed” to be played on the Wii console.

Find more information on WII parental controls here.

For Microsoft Xbox 360, use the following guide:

  1. Using the Xbox 360 controller, select “Family Settings, Console Controls.”
  2. Select “Game Ratings.”
  3. Select the maximum ESRB rating category you deem appropriate for your children.
  4. Select “Set Pass Code” and insert a password.
  5. Select “Done” from the Console Controls screen to lock settings.
  6. Select “Yes” to activate.

More information on Xbox settings can be found here.

With so much violence plaguing today's games for children, the ESRB rating system can be an invaluable tool for parents, especially during the holiday season.

Care.com

If you're a mom to a humanbaby or a furbaby, you have to check out Care.com, an innovative website that helps you find childcare, pet care, tutoring and senior care in your area. It's like Match.com for mommies!

Care.com matches you with a care provider based on your criteria and zip code. And, what I found most comforting is that all providers listed have been screened with background checks, and members can actually see those background checks themselves. That means they have helped screen out unqualified providers for you. References are also provided along with the background checks.

This can be good and bad. Good because I wouldn't want a criminal to take care of my new puppy Sophie, but bad in that there is only one provider listed in my area for pet care. I'd rather have one good provider, though, then dozens of bad ones.

If you're looking to provide any of these services, you can also post a listing through Care.com, which will network you with people in your area who are in need of your service.

My favorite section is "My Neighborhood." When you click on this tab, you can quickly find results for providers in each category, with a map showing their location, their age, experience, rates and more.

Here's the best part! Care.com has extended an invitation to all of you for a free 3-month trial membership! Just click here to get started!

Hanes' Halloween, Part II

As promised, here is another adorable costume from Hanes:

Isn't it so cute? All made from Hanes' tees (I even used some leftover red and black scraps from Hanes' tees for the buttons and bow-tie instead of felt).

These costumes are so easy, and QUICK to make, so if you've procrastinated and still are in need of a costume, head on over to Hanes and pick up a few, affordable and comfortable tees to make a costume for your child.

I've always wanted to be one of those moms who made her kids' Halloween costumes, and this year, thanks to Hanes and their extremely easy-to-make patterns, I finally am!
